About Our Schools

The Conecuh County School System is composed of 1,753 students in six schools. The three schools that are located within the city limits of Evergreen are Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative (AMSTI) Schools. Evergreen Elementary, Conecuh County Junior High, Lyeffion Junior High, and Repton Junior High are all Alabama Reading Initiative (ARI) schools. Evergreen Elementary is also an Alabama Reading First Initiative (ARFI) school. Hillcrest High School has several programs to meet the needs of students: JROTC, AMSTI, college preparatory honors classes, advanced diploma classes, ACCESS Distance Learning, and Dual Enrollment with Ed Reid State Technical College.


Evergreen Elementary School (EES) is located on West Front Street in Evergreen, Alabama. This newly constructed building opened its doors in January of 2003. Since then, a new building has been added for the upper elementary grades (4th & 5th). The school is composed of 502 students in grades Pre-K through fifth grade. The faculty consists of 1 administrator, 30 classroom teachers, 2 special education teachers, 1 counselor, 1 reading coach, 1 intervention teacher, 1 physical education teacher, 1 music teacher, and 1 media specialist. All classes are self-contained. Evergreen Elementary is an Alabama Reading First Initiative (ARFI) school, an (Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative (AMSTI) school, and is accredited by Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The school earned the Title I Distinguished School award in 2006 and 2007.


Thurgood Marshall Middle School (TMMS) is located at 428 Reynolds Avenue in Evergreen, Alabama. The school is composed of 178 students in grades 6th – 8th, 1 administrator, 2 special education teachers, 1 part-time counselor, 1 part-time media specialist, and 8 classroom teachers. The school has recently undergone restructuring. Previously, TMMS housed grades 4th – 7th. However, once the new building was added to Evergreen Elementary school, the fourth and fifth grades were moved to EES and the eighth grade was moved from Hillcrest to TMMS. EES is the feeder school for TMMS.


Lyeffion Junior High School (LJHS) is located on Highway 83, approximately 10 miles west of Evergreen, Alabama. The school is a public school with grade levels Pre-K – 8th grade. The school is composed of approximately 203 students with 1 administrator, 2 special education teachers, 1 math coach, 1 reading coach, 1 part-time counselor, 1 part-time media specialist, and 13 classroom teachers. Therefore, the student/teacher ratio is 15 to 1. Grades Pre-K through 5th are self-contained.


Conecuh County Junior High School (CCJHS) is a Pre-K – 8th grade school located on Cleveland Avenue inside the city limits of Castleberry, Alabama. CCJHS houses 187 students, 1 administrator, 13 classroom teachers, 1 math coach, 1 reading coach, 2 special education teachers, 1 part-time media specialist, and 1 part-time counselor. Grades Pre-K through 6th are self-contained. The school was opened in 1936 as Castleberry School, a K – 12th grade institution, and was renovated in 1987. In 1989, Hillcrest High School was formed and absorbed the upper high school levels of children throughout the county. Conecuh County Junior High was then formed and serves our current population.


Repton Junior High School (RJHS) is a rural school located on Repton Highway 84, twenty miles west of Evergreen, Alabama. A total of 204 students are presently being served in grades Pre-K – 8th grade. Repton has 1 administrator, 12 classroom teachers, 1 special education teacher, 1 part-time counselor, 1 reading coach, 1 part-time reading intervention teacher, and 1 full-time math coach unit. Grades Pre-K through 6th are self-contained.


Hillcrest High School (HHS), Conecuh County’s consolidated high school, is a 9th – 12th grade public school housing approximately 479 students. The student population consists of children from within the city limits as well as from the rural feeder communities of Castleberry, Repton, and Lyeffion. Since its inception in 1989, Hillcrest has fused the individual educational communities into one cohesive unit under the mascot of the Hillcrest Jaguars. Hillcrest is located within the city limits of Evergreen on fifty-four acres nestled in the pine woods behind the old Evergreen High School. The city funded a $60,000 driveway to the school in 1989 and provides its maintenance and upkeep. Classroom space was created in the 2007-2008 school year by moving the JROTC program to the old Evergreen High School building. Hillcrest staff consists of 2 highly qualified administrators, 32 classroom teachers, 1 media specialist, and 2 counselors. Hillcrest High School has had great success with students completing and passing the Alabama High School Graduation Examination. In 2008, a major milestone was repeated. One hundred percent of the senior class passed all parts of the graduation exam.
